Sleep Apnea Treatments
Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder in which a person repeatedly stops and starts breathing. “Apnea” is a Greek word that means “without breath.” These respiratory interruptions can happen hundreds of times a night. Do you snore loudly? Do you feel tired even after a full night’s sleep? You may have sleep apnea. While there are several medical treatments, you may not know that DentFirst can offer solutions to this potentially dangerous disorder.
There are 2 types of sleep apnea:
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA): This is the more common of the 2 forms, it is caused by blockage of the airway. This usually happens when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep.
Central sleep apnea (CSA): Here the airway is not blocked but the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe, due to instability in the respiratory control center.
The most common treatment for sleep apnea is a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine, or CPAP. However, for many this is uncomfortable and cumbersome. Recent developments in dental technology have resulted in an effective solution for mild to moderate sleep apnea – Oral Appliance Therapy. Plastic fittings are slipped over the teeth and a retainer holds the jaw in a specific position which allows for constant air flow and reduces snoring.
If you or a loved one has experienced these symptoms, call your dentist at DentFirst West Midtown to see if you may be a candidate for oral appliance therapy and custom fit one to your mouth.
