Dr. Dowd was born and grew up in New England, where he was an Eagle Scout and Merit Scholarship finalist. At Georgetown University he graduated with Departmental Honors and a degree in English. At Emory Dental Dr. Dowd received the Senior year's Clinic Day award for computerizing the first differential diagnosis program used to identify oral pathological diseases. He also received the Senior Award from the American Academy of Oral Pathology. After dental school Dr. Dowd served as a Lieutenant with the Marines in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps.
In 1976, after military duty, he returned to Atlanta and opened his dental practice as well as teaching Oral Medicine at Emory University School of Dentistry. Dr. Dowd joined with Dr. Musicer and Dr. Abes in 1982 to found DentFirst.
Brian lives in the Atlanta suburbs with his wife, Nora, with whom he celebrates 40 years of marriage. He is a Linux Certified Professional and enjoys programming computers. (He home-built his first PC in 1975). Dr. Dowd is an instrument rated, multi-engine pilot), a ham radio, extra class level, operator (station W1DOC) and an Assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 2000. He is a member of Mensa, a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry since 1980, and a member of the American Academy of Dental Group Practice. Dr. Dowd is also the webmaster at DentFirst as well as several other sites.
