Dr. Dowd was born and grew up in New England, where he was an Eagle Scout and Merit Scholarship finalist. At Georgetown he graduated with Departmental Honors in English. At Emory Dental Dr. Dowd received the Senior year's Clinic Day award for computerizing the first differential diagnosis program used to identify oral pathological diseases. He also received the Senior Award from the American Academy of Oral Pathology.
After dental school he served with the Marines in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps as a Lieutenant.

After military duty, he returned to Atlanta to open his dental practice in 1976 and to teach Oral Medicine at Emory University . Dr. Dowd joined with Dr. Musicer and Dr. Abes in 1982 to begin DENTFIRST.

Brian lives in Atlanta with his wife and son. He is a Linux Certified Professional and enjoys programming computers (he homebuilt his first PC in 1975), aviation (is an instrument rated, multi-engine pilot), ham radio (station W1DOC) and local politics. He is an Assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 2000, member of MENSA , a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry , and a member of the American Academy of Dental Group Practice. Dr. Dowd is the webmaster at DENTFIRST as well as 4 other web sites.
